"Death is likely the single best invention of life, it is life’s change agent, it clears out the old with the new. Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life!"

What Motivates you? ..the surprising truth!

Here is a great RSA video/talk on what really drives motivation. In the corporate world, you will know about performance goals, performance reviews and incentive bonuses, but I have long thought about what really gets great results? I have had staff who have achieved great results for the company, without reference to any performance goal and on the flip side I have seen employees with great financial incentives who have done poorly. This video shows extensive research into what really drives you to achieve results, but there is a caveat, you first have to pay people enough to take the money issue out of the question. One of the points raised is the topic of employee engagement and how this can only be achieved where you give people self direction and don’t try to micro-manage them… sounds familiar? What about the notion of “Mastery”, where you just want to do something because you want to get better at it, so you have fun along the way ….and eventually you get better!

There’s a great reference to a program at Atlassian called Fedex Day where all staff stop work and work on their own project for 24hrs, with no restrictions! Checkit: http://www.atlassian.com/company/about/fedex

What do you think? What motivates you?

Visual Thinking? …who said you can’t draw!
I came across this great article on visual thinking:
http://themultidisciplinarian.com/2012/03/18/visual-thinking/
Have you been in a brainstorming session where there were no visuals, no whiteboard, just talk? Is that possible? How can anyone create something without putting pen to paper? Do you picture things in your head? Is that what we all do to make sense of things, or to create new things?
I suspect everyone visualises something, so everyone is capable of visual thinking. The real trick is, who can take the visual in their head and convey it via a graphic representation, such as a drawing or diagram, so others can get an understanding thru their own interpretation. I believe everyone is capable of drawing something, regardless of their profession or role. I am somewhat biased here, but think design professionals have only one big advantage over others ….just lots of practice! (and the ability to draw straight lines on a whiteboard, LOL)
Remember the old saying: a picture is worth a thousand words :-)

A Choice?
I came across this great little poster and thought, Wow!
Does this make sense to you? I often think its so easy to just be negative or grumpy about things, and where does it get you? …no where productive I suspect. It takes a lot more effort to remain positive, regardless of your circumstance.
Question: Who do you prefer to work with? …the grouch or moaner, or the happy fella?
